Fire Sprinkler Designer

Position Overview

Use CAD equipment to prepare detailed fire sprinkler layouts, assembly drawings, sketches, and diagrams optimized for efficient field installation. Responsible for delivering compliant submittal packages, securing permits, and maintaining project schedules. Works independently on standard tasks while referring complex design challenges to senior leadership.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Design & Technical Preparation

  • Detailed CAD Layouts: Draft complete shop drawings, schematics, and detail views incorporating all dimensions necessary for field installation.

  • Calculations & Documentation: Prepare accurate hydraulic calculations and stock lists tailored to project specifications and budget constraints.

  • Code Compliance: Ensure all designs conform strictly to applicable NFPA standards as well as local and state building codes.

Project Coordination & Permitting

  • 3D/BIM Coordination: Collaborate with MEP teams and General Contractors using Navisworks to resolve spatial conflicts.

  • Permitting & Submittals: Assemble and submit complete approval packages for Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) and General Contractors to obtain required permits.

  • Field Surveys: Conduct precise on-site surveys as required to verify existing conditions and dimensions.

Required Qualifications

1. Technical Knowledge & Code Proficiency

  • NFPA Standards: Deep working knowledge of NFPA 13 (Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems), NFPA 14 (Standpipes), and NFPA 20 (Fire Pumps). Familiarity with NFPA 25 is a plus.

  • Building & Fire Codes: Thorough understanding of International Building Code (IBC), International Fire Code (IFC), and local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) amendments.

  • Hydraulic Calculations: Proven ability to perform manual and software-assisted hydraulic calculations to size piping, evaluate water supplies, and ensure system performance.

2. Software & Drafting Skills

  • 2D CAD Proficiency: Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD or specialized fire protection design software (e.g., AutoSPRINK, HydraCAD, SprinkCAD).

  • 3D / BIM Coordination: Hands-on experience with Navisworks (Clash Detection) and Revit for Multi-Trade (MEP) Coordination.

3. Education & Practical Experience

  • Experience: 3–5+ years of practical layout and detailing experience in fire sprinkler system design for commercial, industrial, and high-density residential projects.

  • Field Surveying: Ability to conduct on-site field surveys, measure existing structures, and verify water supply test data.

  • Education: High school diploma/GED required. Associate degree or technical diploma in Drafting/CAD Technology, Mechanical Design, or Fire Protection Engineering Technology preferred.

4. Core Competencies

  • Mechanical Aptitude: Strong spatial awareness, understanding of pipe fabrication, fitting types, structural attachments, and field installation practices.

  • Applied Mathematics: Proficiency in geometry, algebra, and fluid mechanics basics required for hydraulic flow calculations and layout dimensions.

  • Communication: Ability to collaborate clearly with General Contractors, MEP engineers, field fitters, and AHJ plan reviewers.

Preferred / Nice-to-Have Credentials

  • NICET Certification: NICET Level II or III certification in Water-Based Systems Layout (highly preferred by most employers).

  • State Licensing: Active state fire sprinkler designer/drafting license or certification where required by local regulations.

  • Trade Background: Prior field installation experience as a fire sprinkler fitter or apprentice.
