Position Overview
The Senior Fire Sprinkler Designer serves as a core technical anchor, executing precise, code-compliant, and cost-effective layout designs for complex fire suppression systems across commercial, industrial, high-piled storage, and institutional projects. Driven by a deep commitment to life safety and rigorous adherence to NFPA standards, this role bridges initial conceptual design with field execution—mentoring junior staff, optimizing fabrication efficiency, and driving seamless multi-trade coordination.
Key Responsibilities
Code Leadership & Technical Execution
Advanced Layout & Detailing: Prepare complete, precise shop drawings, schematics, and detail views for wet, dry, pre-action, deluge, and standpipe systems using 2D/3D design tools.
Code & Regulatory Mastery: Apply expert knowledge of NFPA 13, 14, 20, and 24, IBC/IFC, and local AHJ amendments to ensure 100% first-pass approval on design submittals.
Complex Calculations: Perform comprehensive hydraulic calculations, seismic bracing evaluations, and water supply analyses for challenging applications (e.g., high-piled storage, ESFR, and fire pump configurations).
Cross-Disciplinary Impact & Coordination
3D/BIM Collaboration: Lead multi-trade clash detection and spatial coordination in Navisworks/Revit to eliminate constructability issues prior to fabrication.
Permitting & AHJ Liaison: Develop detailed submittal packages, interface directly with local Fire Marshals and AHJs, resolve review comments, and secure required permits promptly.
Fabrication & Field Support: Generate accurate material stock lists and fabrication packages optimized for shop efficiency and error-free field installation. Provide remote/on-site troubleshooting for field fitters.
Mentorship & Process Improvement
Technical Guidance: Mentor mid-level and junior CAD designers on drafting standards, hydraulic theory, pipe routing strategy, and code interpretation.
Design Standards: Refine internal CAD/BIM templates, detail libraries, and design workflows to raise team output quality and reduce revision cycles.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Certification
Experience: 7+ years of dedicated fire sprinkler design and detailing experience in a commercial or industrial contracting environment.
NICET Credential: NICET Level III or IV in Water-Based Systems Layout required.
Education: Associate degree in CAD/Drafting Technology, Mechanical Design, or equivalent practical trade experience.
Technical Proficiencies
Design Tools: Advanced proficiency in AutoSPRINK, HydraCAD, or SprinkCAD, alongside AutoCAD, Navisworks Manage, and Revit.
NFPA & Code Expertise: Expert command of NFPA 13 (including ESFR and high-hazard storage rules), NFPA 14, NFPA 20, and local building/fire codes.
Constructability Focus: Practical understanding of pipe fabrication, fitting allowances, structural attachments, and field installation practices.
Core Competencies
Strong spatial reasoning and mathematical aptitude.
Decisive problem-solving capabilities when resolving field clashes or code ambiguities.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills for collaborating with General Contractors, MEP partners, and municipal inspectors.
